Lucy had seen the cute little puppy. It was adorable, and she loved it. After a long day at work, she decided she wanted to relax, but not with a good horse ride. He wanted to play with the puppy that Mark had recently got. Not including talk to Mark a little she enjoyed talking to him. She knew he had been having a tough time lately with all the extra stress of taking on his father’s job and running the stables on top of the fact that his father had recently suffered a heart attack. She had talked to him a lot on their first date. She was hoping this would subside as another date. She wanted to talk to him, play with his dog and maybe spend some moments in his arms. Or kissing him, because kissing him was an absolutely amazing feeling. Last time she had over reacted a bit she realized when he went to make the kiss deeper.
She first had gone to her cabin after work. Changing from her working clothes and into a pair of nice plain old jeans, her favorite plaid blouse and a pair of cowboy boots. She liked to spend her days dressed like a little cowgirl. At work she usually dressed in English riding gear or jeans and an English riding top and boots, but usually it was riding gear. So she liked to relax a little. Of course, she had dressed up a little for this. She wasn’t quite sure why but she had redone her make-up to a more of an evening look. She had taken some time to curl her hair. She wanted to look pretty around him, maybe it was her trying to impress him, she wasn’t sure.
Lucy took the last few steps toward his door. The Martin cabin, she hoped Jared was out riding or something, she hadn’t thought of that until just now. He was supposed to be resting, if they were too loud or whatever she was sure Mark would find another place for them to go, he cared about his father’s health. She knocked on the door three times before taking a step back. She didn’t like to be standing up right in front of the door when somebody answered. She preferred a little of space. She sure hoped it would be Mark to answer.

Mark was laying on the couch, asleep. He fell asleep watching the news when he came home earlier. Somehow he managed to get all the work done early today. Now he was tuckered out. It was quiet in the house for the time being. Dippy and Fleur were asleep on the floor just under the couch, and Jared was out on a relaxing ride, or at least he was supposed to be. There was no telling if he actually was or going behind Mark's back to double check his son's work. Right now though, Mark didn't really care. He was tired and desperately needed a nap. The dog and puppy seemed to understand that, so they kept the noise level down while Mark laid on the couch, snoring.
Then in one fell swoop, someone knocked, and that sent Dippy barking like crazy, which sent Fleur yipping like mad, and the combination of barking and yipping woke Mark up. He grunted and looked around for a moment, realizing he had fallen asleep. He rolled off the couch with a slight thumb and slowly pulled himself from the wooden floor. He He padded over the the door in his jeans and a simple light blue tee shirt.
He hushed up the dogs, picking Fleur up to keep her from jetting out the front door. That was one thing that Jared and Mark were going to have to break her from because it could potentionally cause trouble. He opened the door, puppy in hand a weak smile lifted his lips as he looked over her with sleep fogged eyes. "Why hello. And to what do I owe this great pleasure?" He asked playfully with a grin. He glanced down to Fleur as she poked her little black nose out to get a whiff of the new comer. He grinned and looked up to Lucy with a smile. "Oh... I see how it is... you came for the puppy and not me huh?" He gave her another of his teasing grins and opened the door some more to let her in, gesturing for her to join them. Dippy was sitting obediently out of the way of the doorway, but his black dipped tail was wagging about excitedly at the sight of Lucy.

Lucy smiled at him as he answered the door. The cute pup was in his arms and she instantly went out to reach for the puppy and started petting it on its head. It was a truly adorable dog and she loved it so much, she wanted to take it home and just cuddle with it all night long, but she was sure Mark wouldn’t be happy with that. He seemed to like the newest addition of their family. Lucy looked up at his smart remark. ”No, I came to play with the puppy and spend some time with you. I’m just killing two birds with one stone.” She got up on her tip toes and gave him a kiss on the cheek. She figured Jared had been out somewhere, and Mark looked sleepy.
She took a step into the door as he motioned for her to come in. ”Did I wake you up?” She said looking at him and studying him as she crouched down to give Dippy a thorough rub. Dippy was adorable and Lucy had always enjoyed spending time with the dog. She loved dogs with a passion and spending time with them was just a bonus to her job at the stables. She enjoyed being with the dogs, too bad Mark had been in the office lately, it wasn’t nearly as fun for a dog at the office as a dog at the stables.
She stood up to look back at Mark, giving him a friendly warm smile. She really liked this guy, and the evening she had spent with him a few days ago just made her realize how much she liked him. She really just enjoyed his presence over all. He was an amazing person to just spend time with, and he cared so much about him. Her eyes start to dance over him as she recalled that evening. Her smile growing happier and truer for every second. ”I’ve missed you.” She admitted to him. There was no reason to not say it, it was very true. She had missed him. She had been busy at the stables with her extra riding lesson, and he had been busy as well, seeing him depended on chance. Sometimes she would make a trip to his office only to find he wasn’t there, so it was all luck. She didn’t bring her phone to work, she didn’t want it to go off and disturb one of the horses.

A weak smile twitched across his lips as her lips brushed over his cheek. He watched her walk in before he shut the door behind him. He set Fleur down, who scrambled over to Lucy as she stooped down to give Dippy some attention. Mark smiled, watching them thoughtfully for a moment before he came up behind her and playfully swept her into his arms. "Mmmm you didn't wake me, but the dogs did." He said gently as he pressed a kiss to her cheek as he set her back down to the ground, holding her close to his large, hard body.
Dippy and Fleur got caught up in the excitement and went romping for the doggy door to the back yard. "I missed you to." He murmured softly as he brushed a soft kiss over her forehead. He could heard Dippy barking in the back yard as the grown dog and puppy frolicked about in the back yard. He took Lucy's hand and led her to the kitchen. He stooped down at the dog bed that laid in a corner of the kitchen. He picked up a couple of toys before he led Lucy out into the back yard. He didn't bother with shoes. He liked to run around the back yard barefoot.
Fleur came romping over after a minute of tug-o-war over one of their toys. Mark smiled and picked the puppy up. Fleur gave a little yip and licked at Mark's nose. He chuckled and handed her over to Lucy with a smile before he ran over to Dippy, who immediately ran away in a game of chase. Mark laughed and threw the squeaky chew toy for the older dog. Dippy raced after it as Mark slowed down and came to a stop. He looked to Lucy with a grin and tossed her the smaller ball that Fleur would be able to wrap her mouth around.

Lucy smiled as Mark lifted her up just barely, to give her a kiss on the cheek. She felt good in his arms and pressed up against him. He was a nice guy, a really nice guy, somebody she liked to just spend time with and have fun. He was quite honestly her best friend. Being her best friend wasn’t saying much, because she didn’t have any other friends, but she had a feeling even if she did make friends nobody would be as close to she as Markus was right now.
Lucy smiled when he said he missed her too. She was happy she wasn’t the only one feeling the miss. She had really missed him. He picked up some toys and she smiled at him. She enjoyed play catch with the dogs, she wondered what Fluer would be like in a game of catch. They walked outside and were greeted by the puppy. Mark picked it up and handed it to Lucy. She rubbed it’s head a little as it started to lick on her face then set it down. It started hoping down around her feet so she crouched down and started attacking, grabbing it’s tail so that it would pull away and run off again.
She saw something coming from the corner of her eye and looked just in time to catch the little ball Mark had thrown at her. ”Hmm are you mad at me? Trying to knock me out?” she asked with a joking humor in her voice. She smiled at him as she rubbed the puppy’s nose in the ball. ”Want it?” she asked the puppy who responded with a yip. Lucy giggled a little and tossed the puppy’s ball over toward Dippy’s while Lucy walked over Mark. She stood behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist. She liked this, nobody was going to see them here. Sure they were alone, but she mostly trusted Mark. He wouldn’t pressure into sex or anything now.

He smirked playfully when she commented about trying to knock him out. "Well now you know how I feel..." He was only teasing her of course. He knew she came to see him as well as the dogs. She liked dogs. She hadn't ever told him the story behind it, but he imagined with time she would. For now he was happy just to romp around the backyard with her and the dogs. Dippy came bounding back with the ball, pracitically tackling Mark in the process. He laughed and wrestled for the ball back before he took it and tossed it again, grinning as he watched the dog bound off, after the ball.
He smiled when he felt her arms wrap around his waist from behind. He grinned and wrapped his arms around her as he watched Fleur scamper off after the ball before he looked to Lucy over his shoulder with a grin. He turned around and plopped down on the ground, pulling her on top of him. Dippy and Fleur saw that and instantly came to join in the fun by showering Mark and Lucy's faces with licks and kisses. Mark laughed and playfully swatted the two away before he slowly sat up, pulling Lucy close. He watched with a grin as Fleur climbed into Lucy's lap. Dippy however was still in a rambunctious mood and wanted to play, so Mark picked up the squeaky chew toy and threw it, grinning as the dog took off after it. "Did you have a good day?" He asked gently as he laid his chin on her shoulder, playfully urging the puppy onto her back, where she squirmed about happily while he rubbed her belly.

She smiled as he joked back with her. Rolling her eyes, he knew she had come for him and the dogs. She wasn’t just using the dogs as a back-up plan, she really had come to see the dogs as well. She couldn’t help it if she had a special connection with dogs. The dog had saved her that one day by protecting her and attacking her dad. The dog had been a great dane and ever since she had loved the dogs and wanted one of her own. Except for, after the fact that the dog stopped the beatings prematurely, her father never let her have a dog, for that fact. But, now that she was free from the hell her father had her trapped her in, she was happy with just playing with somebody else’s dog.
He leaned down and she fell over on top of him. She liked how he pulled her close as she sat on her lap, but quickly the puppy and Dippy were on their way over to join in on the fun. She laughed as the two bombarded them with kisses and loves. She petted Dippy as the puppy climbed onto her lap, then she smiled as Mark through the ball and Dippy happily chased after the toy. She smiled at Mark as he rested his chin on her shoulder. She wrapped her arms around his neck. ”Ahh, I’d say it was pretty much normal. Not the best day in the world, but what do you expect. Right?” She smiled at him, her day hadn’t been bad, it just wasn’t good by any means. She had been yelled at by an outraged adolescent, then had to calm down a mustang and attempt at working with some children who were completely clueless and not willing to learn.
A smile worked its way on her face as she relaxed a little in his arms, rubbing the puppy’s sides while Mark rubbed its tummy. She wished she had taken off her boots in the house, she loved the feeling of grass in-between her toes. It was a relaxing feeling to feel the lush green grass. ”And what about you hun? How was your day?” She knew he probably had had a rough day and wanted him to be able to talk to her about it. Anything on his mind, she wanted him to talk about. She still didn’t know exactly why he wasn’t willing to allow her to help out a little more. She rather do office work than sit in her cabin and do nothing, or watch a boring television show.

He He smiled and hugged her close as she situated herself in his lap. He smiled as brushed a soft kiss over her cheek as she told him about her day. "It can always be better." He admited gently as one hand wrapped around her waist gently. Lord he knew that. Things could definitely be better for him, right now. The inspection would be in a few days and he was so tired. He didn't know how Jared did it sometimes. He just felt so dead and tired, but it felt so nice to sit out in the backyard with Lucy. It was nice, and it was a much needed comfort in this time of high stress. "You ready for the inspection Thursday?" He asked gently. Mark spent the day after her caught Jared in the office letting all the staff know about it so they could be better prepared.
That's why Jared had been sneaking around the office last week. To get the files ready. When Inspection time came around, the courts usually only gave the camp a weeks noticed before they came, and in that time, Jared had to notify all the staff, help clean up the camp, take care of horses, make sure students didn't find out, sort out paper work and records of each student and their progress so far. It was a lot of work, and Markus was the one in charge of it all. Jared was helping a little, but not all that much. His father had decided that this particular inspection would be his deciding point on retirement. If Mark could pull this off, he would be handing over the reins, so to speak, to Mark. That was a lot of pressure, and Mark wasn't sure he was ready for it.
Mark sighed tiredly when she asked how his day was. He nuzzled his face into her shoulder blade tiredly, as his hand stilled over the pup's belly. "It's not over yet." He murmured weakly. He did indeed take an early day off, but to help him keep up he brought the paperwork and bills that needed to be immediately paid home to work on later. "Could have been better, but it wasn't too terribly awful." He said gently as he looked to Fleur as she happily welcomed the soft hand that rubbed over her side. She rolled around in the grass for a minute grunting softly before she jumped up and scampered over to play with Dippy for a moment.

She smiled at him thoughtfully as he said it could always get better. Surely life could always get better. Lucy wasn’t sure how good it could get, she knew she wouldn’t ever have the best life. She could have the best day though. A day where she completely forgot about her past, a day where she wouldn’t have to remember anything. That would be the best day of her life, she didn’t know if it would every happen. She just knew she needed to let go of her past in order to be able to receive that, and she knew it was very true and would be very hard for her to do. She smiled at him again as she came back to this world. ”It will be the best someday,” her smile was from her heart and was true. It would be a good day in her life, and there would be at least one day in her life that she would always remember. She wasn’t sure what it would be, but she knew it would happen.
His question caught her a little off guard. She knew he wasn’t asking her so he could talk to her about it, he was probably just trying to check up on everything. The inspection obviously had him freaked out, as it did everyday that worked at Willow Brooke, they just didn’t show it as well. Lucy knew well enough that if she freaked out about the fact that Mark was having to do all the work of the inspection after a few days after his father’s heart attack, Mark would surely be caught in a panic even more so. ”I am nearly ready, I just need to wash the horses and make sure all stalls are nice and clean.” She smiled at him, she knew it wouldn’t be hard for her to do that at all. Lucy enjoyed cleaning and brushing out the horses and cleaning out the stalls.
She felt him lean into her a little bit more. He must be so tired after such long days of work, and tiring work. It was time consuming and didn’t require much energy, but it was like reading that just made you tired when you did it because you were always calm. He was always in that office, she was actually surprised he had been home when she stopped by, happy, but surprised. ”I know hun, and you have to realize if you need help I am here for you. You sound so tired, do you want me to leave and let you resume your nap?” She rubbed his head gently as the puppy ran off to go play with Dippy. She was going to try to relax him if she couldn’t do anything else.

He chuckled and ran a hand through her hair softly. "I don't know. It's pretty hard to believe that." He wasn't sure there wasn't such a thing as best or perfect. He nuzzled her shoulder, closing his eyes tiredly for a moment. He took a deep breath and sighed, watching the dogs thoughtfully for a moment. He listened to her talk about her progress about how she was doing for the set up for the inspection. "If you need help with anything let me know. Me or one of the stable hands can help if you need it." He said gently as his hand softly and thoughtlessly stroked up and down her side as he held her to himself comfortably. He leaned back against the old oak tree they sat under.
He shook his head weakly, looking to Lucy as her hand gently rubbed his his head. It was a welcome comfort really. He sighed and pressed a soft kiss to her cheek. "I know, Lucy, but... I have to do this on my own." He hadn't told her about the decision Jared made about the inspection. If Mark and the camp survived this inspection and passed it, Jared would take a serious amount of consideration into retiring. At the moment it was just between Jared and Mark, and Mark wasn't sure if he should say anything to anyone. "I want you to stay." He said gently as he hugged her close. He needed this little trip away from work and stress. He looked up, smiling as Dippy and Fleur came trotting up to Mark and Lucy. He smiled and reached to Dippy, playfully ruffing up his neck. The dog rolled over onto his belly, and Fleur just barely got out of the way, scrambling over to Lucy and Mark to keep from being rolled over onto. Mark chuckled and gave Dippy a playful belly rub as the dog enjoyed the affection.

She smiled at him shaking her head. ”There may never be a perfect day, but there has to be one day in everybody’s life that is the best day. So one day the best day will come, and you’re not going to realize what day is until you’ve passed on from this life, but there will be a best day. There has to be, or all your days have been the same.” Lucy did not believe in perfection, her life gave her no reason to believe anything would ever be perfect. She did believe in best though. Someday there had to be a best day, or else you had just lived everyday of your life the same exact day. Since coming to Willow Brooke, Lucy had had a few best days, but they kept changing. Surely her best day so far in life had been when Mark had taken her out, it was the only day in all her life she had been really sincerely happy. Of course, she was happy with her job and she was happy with the horses, but she was able to discover a side of herself she wasn’t even sure existed, and she loved that side of herself. So that day had surely been the best day of her life. It was the day that stood out the most, but there would be other days in life and another day would trump that day, or it would not. She wouldn’t be able to decide on a best day until the day she died.
She laughed at Mark’s comment. ”Oh yes, like you don’t have enough work on your hands. Why the hell would I ask you to help me when I should be helping you? I won’t ask you to help.” She rolled her eyes at him casually. She felt him rub her side and him nuzzling into her shoulder. He was obviously really tired, she felt bad for coming over here. She really should have just waited till tomorrow and saw him in the office. They would have been stressed, but at least she wouldn’t have interrupted his sleeping.
She felt him kiss on the cheek and it was like his lips were of fire because instantly her cheek became beet red. She shook her head at him as he said he needed to do it on his own. She closed her eyes and nudged herself more into him as she rested her head on top of his. ”You Martin men, so independent. It really gets annoying sometimes I hope you know.” She joked with him, she was joking, but it was true. It did get on her nerves sometimes how he could just simply tell her no and that he needed to do it himself. Couldn’t he see that she was trying to help him? She tried to be helpful and he turned her away like she didn’t matter.
She smiled at him as he told her to stay. She rubbed her nose against the top of his head. ”Then I will stay, but why don’t we go inside so you can rest more comfortably.” She gave the idea, hoping he would agree, she wanted him to get some rest. Even if he was just resting his eyes as she spoke to him. She wanted him to be comfortable, she knew how hard he had been working lately. She leaned and gave him a light peck on the lips as Fluer ran over eager to get out of Dippy’s way and wanted attention of her own. Lucy rubbed her back until the puppy rolled over, then Lucy gave her a stomach massage.

He sighed tiredly at her teasing. He knew she was only teasing, but it was something she didn't understand, and he wasn't sure how to explain. "Lucy... it's not like that. I would ask for your help if I could... but I need to do this on my own."He paused a minute, watching as she played with the puppy. "If the inspection goes well... Dad will start to consider retiring in the next few years. And if I screw it up, he's going to take back over against the doctor's advisory, and I just... can't let that happen. He'll end up killing himself if he does that." He said softly, staring at the puppy as she happily let Lucy know how much she enjoyed the young woman's attentions. It was a big deal, and Mark couldn't really ask anyone for help.
He looked to her with a playful grin and without warning hauled her up, holding her bridal style. "Let's go in then." He said playfully as he carried her up the porch steps. The dogs would come in through the doggy door once they were done romping about. Mark installed the doggy door shortly after Dippy joined the family. He carried her back into the living room and laid down, with her onto of him. He gave a little grin and kissed her cheek. "If I fall asleep you'll want to wake me if you want to leave." He smiled and held her securely to him as he situated himself enough to give her some space on the couch. When it came to sleeping he was a big man into snuggling. And when he snuggled, there was no way anything was escaping until he released them in their sleep or they woke him up.
He looked to his feet when he felt Fleur trying to hop up to join them. He grinned and used his foot to help the pup by giving her a little lift up. She hoped up with a little squeaky grunt and crawled over Mark and Lucy till she found a comfortable spot to lay down. He looked over Lucy's shoulder, smiling when he saw Dippy behind her. "Sorry boy. Not enough room for all four of us." He said gently as he reached out to his older canine companion and gave his ears a playful ruffle. Dippy seemed to accept this fact and happily settled down next to the couch, with a rawhide pig ear to chew and gnaw on. Fleur saw the ear and hopped down, carefully inching towards Dippy. Mark watched as Dippy gave a warning growl, sending Fleur to the ground. The puppy laid flat on her belly, eyeing the pig ear while Dippy chewed on it. Mark didn't say or do anything because Dippy would eventually give it over to the puppy, depending on how long she would lay there and look up at him with those big puppy dog eyes, one blue and one brown.

When Mark explained his reasoning for him not wanting Lucy’s help she instantly felt bad. She knew how scared Mark was about his dad’s heart attack. She could tell he was scared, he was a strong independent, confident man, but he was still scared. It had been his father, the person he could count on. If her father had done half the stuff Mark’s father had done for him her and her father would be much better off. She knew that they had a close relationship, and that Jared was really all Mark held on to. Mark probably couldn’t handle losing his father, although Lucy didn’t know what that feeling would be like, there had been quite a few times she had wished her father dead. She really had nothing to say in reply to Mark. She didn’t really want Jared to retire, but that was because she missed Mark at the stables. She didn’t want Mark to work up a heart attack of his own by taking all this on so quickly.
She smiled when he picked her up in his arms. She liked him carrying her, although she wasn’t about to start making out with him. Lucy wasn’t into that stuff. When he laid her on top of him she got uncomfortable. She sat up and scooted off of him so that she was sitting on the edge of the couch. She didn’t want to be on top of him, it was too sexual. She felt her heart beat a little faster like it wanted out of her chest. She tried to not show how scared she had been. She just didn’t want to cuddle on top of him, she could sit in his lap but she wasn’t going to sleep with him. She didn’t want to be held and not able to get away. Plus, what would Jared think if he came home and saw the two. Surely it would send a signal, Lucy wasn’t ready to have sex at all, and that was the end of the story. She took a few deep breaths as she stroked Fleur’s back.
She smiled as Dippy seemed so depressed to not be allowed to join up with the group and cuddle as well. She pet him on the head, trying to decide to get on the floor with him. She didn’t want to upset Mark though, he hadn’t made her mad or made her so she didn’t want to be by him, she just didn’t want to be laying on top of him. She thought that was reasonable enough to not want. Not everybody wanted to lay on top of people. She looked at Mark and smiled. Hoping he would understand that she just didn’t want to lay on him, but the silence between the two was thick and awkward.

He didn't mind that she didn't want to lay on top of him. It didn't bother him because he could understand why she didn't want to. It had a bit more sexual connotation to it than the two of them on their sides. He turned onto his own side to face her, giving her a little more space on the couch before he hugged her close. He brushed a soft kiss over her nose gently and tenderly with a soft smile.
His eyes glanced to Dippy for a moment when he heard the dog growl again. He chuckled as Fleur managed to inch a little closer, her head still on the floor, looking to Dipstick pleadingly for a go at the rawhide pig ear. Dippy finally gave in though and nudged the tasty treat towards the puppy. Her head popped up and her tail started to wag violently as she nipped and chewed at the ear, all while Dippy just watched her. Mark grinned and snuggled close to Lucy, sighing tiredly.
He studied her thoughtfully, taking note that she was a little tense. He stroked her hair softly, wondering if there was something that was bothering her. "Lucy... is something bothering you?" He asked gently. It had gotten quiet between the two of them, and he wasn't really enjoying it. It felt awkward and tense to her as a matter of fact. He didn't like it, and he knew she wasn't enjoying it. They were on his turf now, so he wanted her to feel comfortable in his home. He gave her hair a playful grin and tug on her hair. "Cause you know I won't ask you to do anything unless you want to do it." He said gently as he played with her hair gently.

Lucy smiled weakly as he asked if something were wrong. He continued to attempt to snuggle her. Lucy hadn’t ever cuddled before and it felt awkward to do it. Sure when they were both asleep it was fine, but sleeping together she didn’t like. She knew what people did after sex, she had heard the talk, seen the movies. She just never really wanted to cuddle; she didn’t want him to try to butter her up to do something. Lucy knew how weak she was, and she knew that everybody could get caught in the moment, Lucy could as well. Even though it isn’t as likely, she very well could get caught in the moment. She wanted to stop things before she got caught in a moment and did something she would regret. Its one of her many reasons for not drinking. Besides her dad being an abusive alcohol, she knew the likeliness of her having sex increased if she wasn’t fully there.
Lucy looked at her shoes as he asked if something was wrong. ”It’s just…” She didn’t want to upset him, she did really like him. She just wasn’t sure how comfortable she was with cuddling with him. ”I don’t think I am a cuddlier..” She smiled at him, trying to put it in a delicate way where he wouldn’t get upset. She leaned down and kissed the top of his forehead. She just didn’t want to feel helpless in the situation. He was clearly stronger than her, although Lucy had gained quite a few muscles, most of them were riding muscles in her leg. She was strong enough to lift a bale of hay as well, but she wasn’t nearly as strong as him. She didn’t think he would over power her, rape her, but Lucy had grown to be just extra protective of herself. She wanted to make sure nothing happened again.
She wanted him to sit up, but she wouldn’t say anything. If he sat up, she would sit comfortable in his lap and lean her head into him, let him wrap his arms around her. She felt more comfortable sitting up, having the feeling she could get up if she needed to. He was just so strong and it scared her to feel like he could control her if he needed too.
