Setting his paper coffee cup down, Gideon looked down at his watch. It was a little after ten in the morning. He had been sitting in his same stool for nearly two hours, downing cup after cup of the strong caffeine. It was what he’d been basically living off of for the past twenty-four hours. Lavinnia was still missing. She had gone off one afternoon and hadn’t come back. He had checked everyplace that he could think of. The hospital, the house. Even the local stores. She wasn’t answering any calls or texts and nobody had seen her for a while. Gideon had never been more worried in his life. This wasn’t like Nia. She didn’t just disappear.
Gideon drowned the last of his drink. He grimaced slightly as the coffee slid down his dry throat, black. It cleared his cloudy mind a bit, allowing him to think more sharply. Had Lavinnia left him? They were in the midst of their engagement, prepared to have their wedding in only a few months. Maybe she got cold feet and ran off for a few days to clear her head. Gideon couldn’t blame her. With her mother in hospital and having the wedding so soon, things must be stressful for her. He wouldn’t mind putting off the wedding for a bit if it would help her. He wanted nothing but the best for Lavinnia. She deserved that and more. They had met their sophomore year of high school and had been together since. High school sweethearts. Gideon smiled fondly. She hadn’t changed much over the years. More mature perhaps, but she was quite the same. Nia was timeless in his heart.
He just wanted to know that whenever she was, she was okay.
Standing up from the table, Gideon stiffly gathered his belongs and headed towards the door. It was no use just sitting around and waiting. He admitted to himself that there was no use moping around and thinking of all the possibilities as to where Nia was hiding. He dumped his empty coffee into the trash on his way out of the shop. After a long period of sitting, his muscles were tight and sore. He stretched his arms behind his head as he walked out into the expected weather of Forks. Rain. The drops of the cold water hit the shoulders of his jacket mercilessly as he hastily loped down the sidewalk. Shoving his hands into the deep pockets of his jeans, Gideon shivered. He hated Forks. Definitely not the people, they were nice enough, but the place. It was cold, wet, and gloomy nonstop. He missed the bustling city of Chicago and the hot, humid summers. Forks was too quiet for his liking but he had come here voluntarily so there was nothing he could do but wait out Lavinnia’s mother’s condition and then head back home. The two had come to Forks on account of Carrie Ross, Nia’s seriously sick biological mother. The last time he had seen the woman hadn’t been good. It surely wasn’t long now.
Pulling out his cell phone, Gideon scanned his received messages for any sign of Lavinnia. No. Just several texts from friends back in Chicago. Sighing, his snapped the phone shut and returned it to his pocket. It was raining and he was still missing Nia. What a miserable day.
